Originated for an Irish myth. A man named Jack tricked the devil and part of the bargain was that he would leave Jack alone for 1 year and if Jack died the devil would not claim his soul. After the 1 year Jack tricked the devil again this time the devil would not bother Jack for 10 years. Jack passed away and as the devil promised he did not claim Jacks soul. Unfortunately for Jack God didn't claim Jacks soul either because of his trickery. So Jack was forced to wonder the darkness of purgatory. The devil gave Jack a burning coal from hell which Jack made a lantern and placed the coal in. He used it to guide himself through purgatory. The Irish and Scots began to make their own lanterns from turnips and potatoes. They believed that the scary faces would frighten wandering spirits away. Pumpkin Jack O' Lanterns were not popular until these cultures came to the United States where pumpkins are abundant and make great lanterns.
Unfortunately I don't think Brooke's Jack O' Lanterns and my Jack O' Lanterns from last year really scared any spirits away hahaha.
